Case study of first episode schizophrenia

Shinu K. Kuriakose.

Abstract
We present a case of 21-year male who as per his university personnel was found talking to television, absenteeism from classes and continuous scribbling on note book. At the time of presentation to the emergency department he was agitated. When the patient became calm, he gave history of auditory hallucinations supposedly directing him to change TV or radio channels to get messages and felt anxiety of being hurt if not complying with these directions. There was history of smoking cannabis but no history of alcohol or illicit drug abuse. The decline in cognitive functioning, social withdrawal, associated substance abuse (especially cannabis) and course of the first episode symptoms was quite suggestive of schizophrenia.

Key words: First episode schizophrenia, Mental health, Psychiatry
